Leveling Tape Edges?
PhillipJ PhillipJ is offline 03-07-2009

I painted a design on one of my bike parts and put a pretty good coat of paint on, and have quite a tape edge on it. I sprayed over the design with one coat of candy. Wondering what would be the best way to smooth out those edges before I clear it?

Thanks Dean, Ya hey, I was putting a dark blue on black and got carried away as I don't see so well anymore. Funny I can even attempt to paint. Went out & bought bigger light bulbs today.

I scuffed the edges before I cleared it, just to level the scragglers and it is coming along nicely now. Am trying to tape out a beveled edge on the small design, on a very curved part tonight. It's the ignition switch dash on an FLHT. Probably be at it till daylight.

This is such a curse when you get carried away with somthing going right. I remember, after finding huge rasied areas, having the bright idea of spraying bucket loads of clear on top thinking "that will cover it" and then watching the entire design slip slowly and silently to the edge. I learnt the hard way. Always take your time. Those extra few minutes will be worth it.

Good luck

I use a method called shaving. You use a straight edged razor blade and you actually cut off the paint lip. It takes alot of practice (and there are some tricks to it) but you can remove about 85% of the paint lip. This allows you to cut way back on the amount of clear and labor needed to level the two surfaces.
