Latex clear coats?
Stroke'n it Stroke'n it is offline 04-11-2009

Has anyone used any latex (water based) clear coats yet? And what the pro's and cons, besides being better for the envoirment and clean up. What is the shine like? I was thinking about using some of this for my cabinets after I paint them, but not sure how the shine would be.

It says that it's for indoor and outdoor, and the paint guy at Home Depot said that it's very durable. The instructions says that its chip resistant. I just thought maybe I could use my spray gun to shoot this on my garage cabinets. I did a test and put alittle on my countertop in the garage, and its pretty tough stuff, and the shine looks pretty good too, but it's still drying, so I thought I would ask you guys before I wasted my time on spraying the cabinets first. It's also pretty thick too, so I was going to thin it out. Another question while I'm on the topic. Can I use distilled water and rubbing alcohol with this too like the airbrush paints?

I didn't get to try water base clear coats but I used water based paints and we had a paint booth specially for it because it needs air circulation to dry,I'm pretty sure it's the same with the clear.

If you look in the back corners you see the QAD's (Quality Air Drying) I was advised to spray water based with this setup, only thing is if time isn't a concern I don't know how much it needs without this.

The pro's of water based is the massive headaches that painter's had after a weeks work of painting day after day was practically non existent(paint cabin really doesn't smell at all)

Con's would be the setup needed and a slightly(5 mins more maybe from my experience during winter) drying time compared to solvent time but when I talked about this to a Mercedes painter he said that it takes the same time at the end.Mercedes have water only paint here.

Also that QAD is pretty expensive.

The urethane paints are going to become obsolete fairly soon just like the old laquer. A paint tech that I know from PPG said that he is going to convert all the shops he deals with over to waterbased paints by next year. I-CAR is also now offering a class on waterbased systems. So it won't be long before we all have to convert to waterbased.

The world is trying to go "green" So it's always better to use water borne paints and clears. Nice info.
