Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
I just ran across a website for this paint. The stuff looks great. Has anybody tried it?

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
Bill,
I super dig Alsa'a stuff. In particular the mirrachrome look without having to spend a gazillion dollars on chrome plating.
I wanted to use it on my motorcycle so I asked a local custom shop owner friend of mine about it. He does a lot of trick stuff and he tried it. Even though he has the full pro shop set up and has been in the business for 20 yrs he says that he wont paint with it. I thought that was a little wierd until I talked to an Alsa technician about the application process. Holy cow it is realllllllllllyyyyyy high maitenance. Nothing too bad, base coat black, clear coat, wait two weeks (minimum) then buy some rabbit feet for good luck, load up the HVLP and mist with as little paint as possible. Then clear. Sounds easy right?
Apparently the climate (temp, humidity) has a lot to do with getting the right coverage of the chrome. Also very hard to see if you got the right coverage while you are painting. Therefore it is super hard to get it done right and impossible to do outside of a pro shop.
So in summary, it sounds impossible and very few people seem to be able apply it correctly. I will then, of course, buy some when I can afford it and prove the naysayers wrong by being the only guy in the world that can spray it Unless you beat me to it of course......
Good luck,
Oz

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
Oz, I have always liked to explore my limits, which causes me to make a lot of mistakes. Sometimes it even hurts. I do have a shop just for painting but it's far from a pro shop. I'll probably buy a small quantity and see what happens. I'll post the results regardless of how it looks. Give me a month or so to get to it.
Thanks for the reply!

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
I'm sorry to say that I have not even tried it yet. And I haven't done much airbrush work lately. I had to stop playing and get serious about about some other issues. I hope to get to back to some spraying in a few weeks.

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
Guys, ya gotta give this stuff a go, ok so I'm really good at NOT following instructions, but on the basketball I painted you would swear it was actually chromed!
I have use their ghost chrome plenty of times and it's easy as, the MC is tougher but it was still fun to play with

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
All right! You all shamed me into it. I ordered the MirraChrome kit from ALSA. I have two projects that could use this. All I need now is time and luck. If you any extra of those two things I sure could use em.

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
killer! Just remember that the clearcoat that you shoot it on has to have dried for at least 2 weeks. At least thats what they said. Can't wait to see it!

Go for it Bill!
Oz, I had that drummed into me also by the rep here, I fould out that it all depends on what clear you use, each different type of clear has a different curing time, this is the time it takes for all of the gasses to leave the job and for the clear to fully harden.
With ALSA's MC you need to make sure that this step is adhered too or you will get "funny marks and bubbles" as told to me by the rep.
But, I will say this, as my experience has shown, I'm not a very patient person nor a very fussy person, I'm not good at following instructions either!
I wish I had some pics of the basketball's I painted, after 18 months of hard use they still look damn good! Some of the other things I painted "for the hell of it" were suspension parts for my brothers ute, they also look great, but the car hasn't hit the road yet so I can't say anything about how well the paintwork (my part in the look, not the paints) will hold up under constant use.
Hopefully in the next week or so I will get the chance to paint the fuel tank of my 36 Dodge in something like this, the poor old girl needs to have something looking pretty for her!
Good luck with it brother, I know you will do a stunning job.

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
Guys, the kit I ordered is supposed to have all of the needed ingredients. I hope it comes with instructions. If not, the instructions are on the website and I will read them twice before opening any can; which is not normal for me. Like you Rowie, I sometimes have to go looking for instructions after I have screwed everything up real bad. But at the price of this stuff I will make certain I understand the process. I'll take pictures as I go along. The one thing I want to do is put the Yamaha tuning fork logo on the air cleaner covers in chrome. So I have two problems. Fist problem will be making the tempaltes and the second will be actually doing the painting.
Please be patient, I will get to this.

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
Bill,
For the Yamah tuning fork logo......your local vinyl sign shop should have that (or can make it easily) in computer cut vinyl from a plotter. That would be the easiest, most exact, and most professional way to do it.....specially since the cost of the paint is so high, might as well go all the way with it and make it look like it's from the factory!

Re: Mirra Chrome Paint by ALSA
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Spent the past two days sick in bed. Starting to feel better now. I'll check with sign maker I know here about doing it in vinyl.
Thanks,
Bill
