My First Attempt, and all the mistakes!
533clive 533clive is online now 12-30-2008

Recently I decided to give these RC car, clear body, backwards painting things a go, and let me tell you.........what a nightmare!! (For me anyway! )

This may well turn into a bit of a lengthy thread, because what I want to do is impart the bits of knowledge that I learnt from doing one of these. Some of the points are obvious (or should be to me by now), in fact, most of them are!!!

I'd done a bit of scale modelling when I was younger (and I don't mean at mini-fashion shows before anyone chirps up!! ), tanks and stuff, and thought I'd been getting on with this painting malarky okay! What a humbling and infuriating project this was!

I found a '61 Chevy Impala, and thought I'd give it a bit of a custom look! Had a good long think about what I wanted to achieve with it, thought about how I was going to paint this (in reverse), and then wrote each step down so I had a guide and didn't f**k up and miss a step!

Then I sat down armed with my trusty paint/AB etc (my first mistake!)

Having cleaned the transparent body with soap and water as recommended, I then started masking with W&N Masking fluid, which is also clear, and takes a while to dry, two things that were to lead to my downfall! Got bored waiting for it to dry (Patience Clive, Patience!), and decided, sod it, i'll peel that off and mask as normal, but from underneath!

About an hour later I was ready with my first paint layer!!

As you can see in the pics, everything that could have then gone wrong, went wrong, and here's as much of a complete list of points I've learnt from doing this first one (because I WILL NOT be defeated by these!!)

1) If you make a plan, stick to it......patience Clive
2) If you clean something ensure it is THOROUGHLY dry, or it WILL effect paint layers further on down the project. See the side view picture!......patience Clive
3) Chrome effect Plastikote aerosol paint doesn't look good from underneath! See all pictures!
4) Masking Fluid IS best for these, but I will add a drop or two of ComArt paint into it next time just to tint it, so I can see where it goes......You DO NOT know best clive!
5) If stuff takes time to dry, then LET IT!!!...... again, patience Clive (a recurring theme! )
6) Intercoat EVERYTHING!!! I must have just been lucky so far with no paint system reacting with others, no so this time, the pinstriping that I used POSCA pens to do cracked when the candy was applied!!!)
7) There is not a lot of room inside one of these shells to work, hence the (slightly) wonky pinstriping!
8) DO NOT touch your HoK candies to see if they're dry, and if you do, don't touch the bit right in the middle of the boot, as you can't fix this! See the pic of the rear!!!!!!!!!......patience Clive (refer to point 5!)
9) Silver is not a good colour to 'marbelize' with, when the next coat (that would be underneath it as you look at the finished piece  ) is a pearlescent white! And let it dry before applying the white!!!!!......again, refer to number 5!
10) Lightly cut round your masked off areas before trying to remove the masks as it WILL lift the paint!......Point 5, again!!!
11) Tape residue sticks to these like Poo to a blanket, so I refer you once again to point 4!

Phew!! this almost got drop kicked into the bin a few times during this project, but I thought I'd finish (if you can call it that!) it, learn from it, and try and share my points with you all!!

Gonna buy another Impala shell and do this properly this time, after the NSX I've just got! I WILL NOT BE BEATEN!!!

Anyhow, here's the photo's!! Give it a try some time, it'll fry your brain!!!!!!! Kudos to people who turn out some top-looking one's of these!!!

Clive :copter:

Nice info! And sorry you had to be the one to lean it this way
Personally have no interest in painting these.. have a hard enough time going forwards let a lone backwards! Even with all the issues you had, it still looks cool. Just the concept of tiny little backward pin stripes makes me want to run and hide! Looking forward to seeing the next one!

Thanks for the comments people!

Aix, Tiny pinstripes are FAR easier than big ones!!

Dean, I did scuff it VERY lightly with grey scotchbrite. Just didn't know how visible the scuffs would be, so didn't go wild on it! Will do next time!

Thanks for the review. I'm considering attempting some R/C bodies in the future and this helps.

That really does look nice.. Watched a couple video's of someone showing you how to paint a model car, and that is just mind boggling. but your turned out very nice.. Good Job..
