Default Question regarding paint.

I'm hoping that I am posting this in the correct forum, but if not, can someone move it?

My question.
I've been looking at paints for the airbrush. I'm used to automotive paint and everything I have had to do has been pretty much templates and touch up spray guns. I've mostly used the air brush to touch up areas and highlight flames and such.

Now I am looking at doing some fuel tanks on some bikes and want to start out slow. So, gonna do a Honda Magna tank to start out.
Dk Blue metallic base, clear, med blue flames with light blue highlights then several coats of clear. Least that is the plan.

Ok, somewhere in there was supposed to be my question.
Here goes.
I'm used to using some candy in the clear on automotive after the flames have gone on. I thought about using some cobalt blue candy in the clear, to ghost up the flames. Does that sound reasonable?

I figured on going with House of Kolor, as the only paints I can get locally are Martin Senour.

Any other suggestions to paint?

Opatience, you can also candy before clearing and knock back the flames to your liking before you clear. HOK website I think has info on clear mixing with candies

GOING WITH HOK YOU CANNOT GO WRONG BASE COLORS MIX AT A 2 TO 1 RATIO THAT IS 2 PARTS PAINT TO 1 PART REDUCER,FOR FINE DETAIL WORK YOU CAN GO AS FAR AS 1 TO 1. THEY HAVE THIS PRODUCT SG-100 BASICALLY PAINT WITHOUT PIGMENT, INTERCOAT CLEAR, THIS ALLOWS YOU TO MIX YOUR CANDY AND APPLY IT WITHOUT THE FUZZ OF DOING IT WITH TOP COAT CLEAR APPLICATION. YOU CAN DO DROP SHADOWS WITH THIS MIXTURE AS WELL, APPLY BASE THEN CANDY AND REPEAT TO GET A SENSE OF DEPTH. AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. IF YOU DO DECIDE TO GO WITH HOK YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED....

Thanks guys.

Another question, for those who do motorcycle tanks, what does it generally take for the base coat? A pint or so to cover?
I'm used to painting on a much larger scale, so bear with me, as motorcycle painting is new to me.

I'll go with your advice on the clear and candy. Sounds more economical too.

I haven't used HOK yet, mostly Dupont and Martin Senour. I've heard tons good about HOK, so I figured that was my best bet.

I happen to love Duponts Hot Hues, candies. The tank in the attached was done with all Dupont. Black base, Golden Honey candy for the bulk of the flame and Apple Red for the tips and highlights. You'll use a lot less than a pint of paint for the base color and in this case the flames used mere ounces. They were sprayed with an Iwata Eclipse gravity feed airbrush.

Have fun!
