Im new to air brushing...
Hello everyone,
I am new to air brushing... as the title reads. I havent even bought an air brush kit yet. A little history on myself... I have mastered the pencil, paint characters, played with a spray can a few times, build custom Fieros, and now Im ready to learn Air Brushing.
I belong to a local Antique Auto club.
I am a house painter by trade (15 years)
I am ready to learn everything anyone is willing to teach. Im 38 years old and found that my passsion is Air Brushing, even though I never spayed a stroke on one, yet!
I have been reading as much as I can on this forum and have decided that this is a place Im going to visite everyday and learn all I can. Does anyone want to direct me in the right direction for a kit? I dont need a pro kit yet..and Im willing to buy a Wal Mart one if i have to...so that I can get this new adventure on its way. Looking forward to making friends here. John

Re: Im new to air brushing...
John
Welcome to our little place in cyber space, Dixie Art www.dixieart.com they advertise with us in the magazine so I have to give them a plug, great company check their web site out
A airbrush is just like any other tool you can buy a cheap 5 an 1 or sash tool (house painting tools for those that don't know) or you can buy quailty, go for quailty John you won't reget it Paasche, Badger or Iwata parts are easy to come by all quailty brushs. Iwata Eclipse BCS for about $85.00 comes with a hose you can't go wrong, paint golden airbrush colors, Comart or Doc PH Martins is what you need
free basic lessons you'll find on www.howtoairbrush.com
have fun

I bookmarked the links you posted and have read most of the how-tos already.
Iwata Eclipse BCS for about $85.00, seems like the price range I was looking for. I want to practice first before I subscribe to your mag. Thanks fo the heads up. John

Re: Im new to air brushing...
I still havent found myself the equipment to start airbrushing but I have read all the lessons. Ive been searching on Ebay alot but get confused pricing them out. I live in a rural town on the coast of Maine, so finding a store around here is almost impossable, If any of you long-timers have any beginner equipment that I could buy cheap..please let me know. John

Re: Im new to air brushing...
John, welcome, you have defineitly landed in the right place for fun and help. A couple of things from one newbie to another. Although I can't speak for Dixie art (being a Caunuk and all), I do know being rural means trips to the big smoke or ordering on line. Many here do order on line and it is a great way to go. The iwata eclipes is a great brush and worth every cent. I use mine all the time and it has lots of room to grow. If you can, don't wait to order you magazine, I spent so much money on things like how to books and so forth that I didn't need, the mag can do it all. I know this seems like a shameless plug, but I have no vested interest other than the joy it has brought to me in my learning process. Most of the articles are by artists that frequent this site and these same artist are more than willing to help out where they can. This has been a great learning experience for me. If you are serious about learning, then it will be one of your best purchases. The free lessons Don and crew provide are worthy to get you started, but I guarentee your interest will peek quicker than your skills and you will want to see what else is available. Thats how it was for me.
anyway have fun, as that is the best part
Eric

Welcome to the forum John! As others have said, you really can't go wrong with Dixie Art. The prices are great and they have free shipping on orders over $45, which you are already over with the brush purchase. They really are great!

Scott, Im from blue hill, which is near Bar Harbor. Ill have to google to see where Lebanon is. That would be a pleasure to try some equipment.
This site over whelms me with all the advice. I honestly love the whole Airbrushing idea. To the point that I will be using it as a career, sometime in the future. So, I can let everyone here know that all advice I recieve will be taken serious. I will subscribe to the mag. that sponsers this site. I too, have thought and seen all the "other" how-to books and thought about ordering them. Ill start with a subscribtion instead.
iwata eclipes, since I havent used a gun yet, this product does seem to speak "quality". I also like the Badger name because of the price.
http://www.dixieart.com I have taken a look at their product and thought the prices were right, then I thought I could save a buck and try the Ebay thing. I should just smarten up and order from a supplier. Thanks again for all the advice. I do feel welcomed here and I sure will post some of my work when I get something done. John

Re: Im new to air brushing...
I bought Iwata Eclipse BCS from Dixie Art a few weeks back. Dixie was great answering all my questions and shipped out promptly. Do get yourself a spare set of the nozzle and needle as they are the wearable parts in the brush. Also from one newbie to another: I like my Iwata Eclipse BCS but just learned a lesion the hard way. When you first remove the needle for cleaning be VERY careful putting it back in as the nozzle is extremely fragile. I just used mine for the first time Sunday for a few hours. It worked great and I was able to make very fine lines just a little thinker then a pencil to a full 2” on the fly. Now I'm waiting for a new needle and nozzle from Dixie Arts to fix my mess up. Oh well that's why I got it to learn these things.

Re: Im new to air brushing...
I USED TO BE A MAINIAC----DOES THAT COUNT???? Lived in the Portland area 15 years, on my boat at Dimillos for 6 years!!! (sure could use a lobster roll!)
RE the magazines!!!!!!!!!!! I wished I had subscribed a LONG time ago!!
They are invaluable to a newbie!!! One work of caution---- and one I shared with Don--------becareful with the "on-line" magazine!!!!!!!! You may find yourself sitting with your face in the computer screen entirely tooooooo long!!!!!!!!!! It is absolutly LOADED with great stuff for a new airbrush user----------------I can't say "artist"-------Do I Look Like an Artist???
Cornshuck!!
