-Christmas donation supports children’s project in Kenya
Kornwestheim, Germany, December 2007. The consistently positive reaction of SATA customers and business partners has induced SATA to financially support a social project instead of giving per-sonal Christmas presents to its customers.
This year’s donation – it is the 9th year of the SATA donation for children in great need – goes again to an international organization, namely the charity organization Neue Wege für Kenia e.V. (New Ways for Kenya), a catholic mission which was founded in 1987. The donation supports a project to supply water to the Turkana nomads in the northern part of Kenya and, especially, to finance feeding and education of their children.
The Turkana area is located in the northwestern part of Kenya bordering on Ethiopia, Sudan and Uganda. It is a drought-stricken area where most of the people are nomads belonging to the Turkana tribe who depend on their herds of camels, donkeys, goats and sheep. In the past decades, this area has been repeatedly suffering from severe drought periods, with an average rainfall of 3-5 inches (77–120 mm/m2) per year, leading to serious food shortages. Especially the young people are afflicted by the famine. 223 out of 1,000 children die before they are 5 years old. Moreover, most of the chil-dren do not receive any school education.
The project will contribute to the alleviation of these problems as it is planned to build three water res-ervoirs in this area supplying the families and their herds in this area with water. A Kindergar-ten/nomad school will be established at each water reservoir where the children of the nomads be-tween the age of three and seven years will learn to read, to write and to calculate and where they will receive an adequate meal every day. Part of the project also includes the cultivation of little gar-dens where the children and their mothers can grow their own fruit and vegetables. The children will have access to medical care, the mothers will be taught basic knowledge in nutrition, hygiene and farming.
In an area of 580 square miles (1,500 km²) the nomad families will – sponsored by the project – be supplied with sufficient drinking water for themselves and their herds. So far, the charity “Neue Wege für Kenia e.V.” has erected more than 40 dams with more than 30 kindergarten/nomad schools in an area of over 10,500 square miles (27,000 km²).
It is assured that the children’s relief organization will directly receive the SATA donation to its full ex-tent and undiminished by administration costs.
Considering the severe situation so many children in Africa live in, any donation remains small. How-ever, SATA is glad to leave a sign of charity and expresses its gratitude to customers and business partners who are willing to do without their Christmas gifts in favor of this donation.
