911 MY SKATEBOARD IS WRINKLING

HELP ME,,,,this kid bought it idiot me went out and purchased a lacguar used on wood ,,thought wood board,,hey it would make it super shinny,,and i sprayed it sooooooooooooo close and soooooooooo thick,,the spray was a rattle can,,,i just kept caking it on before it dried,,wanted that deep look and i went back in the room to check on ti and ITS ALL WRINKLED,,what the heck!!!!!!!!!!! im such an idiot,,,,how can i spray this board ,,thank god i bought 2 new boards,,ill redo the board but what do i clear it with??? and why did that happen??

Spray thin coats let it set for half hour ot more before spraying the next coat

Nat,

Not sure what kind of spray equipment you have but when it comes to just sparying clear on wood I've had a lot of luck using a regular siphon feed spray gun and polyurethane from either Valspar or Minwax etc. So far I have not used those products over a ureathane base but it should be fine and I'll find out tomorrow because I'm spraying a wood part with a small graphic. I'll let you know how it went later tomorrow.


If it looks good I'll send picutres otherwise I'll just send bad news.

I had the exact same thing happen with my BMX helmet. Probably the same products too..... Its Precisely what Don said... Start with two really light coats and let them tack up and THEN put on the thick coats. I did it with a leather jacket before too, luckily on that one it made for a kind of cool effect and no one knew it was a complete accident!

Nat-I just finished a board and I decided not to use automotive clear. Found some Sears polyurathane Marine Varnish. Diluted with a little minaral spirts. I put the first coat on this morning and I'll let you know how it holds up. Oh yeah its over Auto Air. The can says 8-12 hours between coats. I sprayed it on with a small jam gun. So far so good no lift yet. I think you may have gotten a little crazy and put it on too thick! LOL - Ill keep you posted.

Yup like Don said light coats work better. As you spray the material you have to give the solvents time to evaporate if not they get trapped in between layers and fecal matter will hit the mechanical device w/rotating blades.

Laquer over acrylic paints is generaly a no no!! The othe way around is some times ok. generally it is best to stick wit an acrylic clear if you are using an acrylic paint. To get the deep look you just need a lot of coats and I beleive you need to wet sand in between coats with a 1500 grit sand paper.

Lacquer has a low flash point (the solvents evaporate at low temperatures), so spraying on big thick layers means that the outside layer dries fast, trapping the wet inner layers before they can flash (release the bulk of their solvents). You can also run into conflicts between types of paint, the basic solvents in one can destroy the other, causing the effected paint to wrinkle, crack, peel away, etc.,
I have used lacquers over acrylics, but as Don and others have so rightly stated, you need to go at it with very light layers. Light mists let the lacquer flash off before they start soaking into the artwork, after a few misty/light coats, you will have the original artwork coated well enough that the later sprayed layers won't have any problems adhering to.

You also need to make sure your work surface is nice and clean, contamination from body oils and such can ruin a nice paint job in a hurry.

Also make sure you give the basic board a coating of a sealant before you add artwork, the sealant keeps the wood from acting like a sponge, it lets you create your artwork without it looking like it was being sucked into quicksand, it also makes it easier to lay down a nice clear coat over the whole thing when you are done. Giving the sealant or base coat a good scuff before you add artwork will help give it some tooth, and help it promote adhesion between the artwork and the base, and the clear coat and everything below it.
