Default Simple Detail Trick

Here's a very simple way of producing better detail with your airbrush. Its been around for years not sure anyone can truely take credit for coming up with it . Thought it would be worth posting again for those of you who have not tried it.

the first thing i do when i take my AB !!! Impossible for me to be precise with the cap. Moreover , you can check all the time the neddle and remove quickly the paint before the paint dry on it . But as say kimmo , avoid to touch the surface or you will have to order a new one !!! I haven't receive mine yet !!!!

ive tried this with my hp-ch it works, but i hate the thoufght of nocking thatr needle !

i also use a badger sotar 20/20 - this is a toal pain for the ol needle sticking out. 90 degree bends are very easy to obtain with the slightest nock

ouch !

With my airbrush, it won't work. I've got the evolution harder and steenbeck with grafity. When I turn off the cap, I blow away my nozzle

Hello. I have removed the needle cap only and cannot get the paint to flow. I have the badger 155 anthem. I'd like to get more detailed lines out of it but no matter what I try, wether it's getting a little closer to the surface or lowering the air pressure or thinning of paint I always seem to get the spider effect. Which if I wanted that I probably wouldn't get that right. Any suggestions? The surface I like to work on most is metal. I have found that building the paint up is better, but for the finer lines I don't want all that over spray. I'm trying to do some of the work freehand and getting the detail is somewhat frustraitng. The paint that I've used is auto air and regular craft paint. I get the same results. To much spidering.

your paint is too thin for the pressure, or your pressure is too high for your paint. You have to find the good mix by yourself by trying to thin your paint just a little and down the pressure until to get a good spray . Then , if you think the paint can be thin more , do it (just a little) , and down more the presuure . The paint has to get the milk consictence and you should be able to down the pressure less than 1 bar , (14.51 spy !)

The Anthem doesn't have a cap to remove, so this trick doesn't apply to all airbrushes. Are you using the semi opaque or transparent autoair? The semi opaque sucks! I've tried everything to get that to spray good and the only thing it's good for is large areas. With that said, the transparent and the detail colors work great and if they're a little thick add some reducer and they'll be fine. And throw away those craft paints. They're not meant to go through an airbrush and the pigments aren't ground fine enough. If you do get it thin enough to go through the airbrush, it will be so transparent you'll have to go over it several times. Another thing to avoid spidering is move faster. You might be going to slow for the air pressure. You should be shooting autoair aroung 30 to 60 psi. If you don't have one yet, pick up the autoair manual and read it, it's a big help.

No problem Don, I didn't think about it either till Metalcat had the problem. There is a trick tho for VL's and Vegas where you can buy a paint picker air cap or use a dremel tool and grind it down so you can pick the paint from the tip easier. This also lets you get finer detail. If I get a chance I'll take a pic.

Actually I've been painting like this for years......So long that I never paint with the needle cap on.After you get used to it you wont miss it at all.the only time I will put the needle caps on is during transportation.
Also try not to think about it....... takes away the pressure of bending needles.
