Default Paint Questions

I am using regular poster board from wally world to practice on, I noticed that when I get close and try to do a fine line the paint runs, Is it a combination that I don't know what I am doing and the paper? I have a hard time getting a fairly sharp thin line to make my circle in lesson 2 and the tree's in lesson 3.

Also on the dagger strokes, it feels strange to start off with more paint and move forward while letting off the paint. Any tips for the newbie here?
