Re: Introducing myself
Hello Darla, Thanks for the welcome. It looks like this is the place to come to learn AB. I see your picture of your work in the background of your photo. If I could only be 1/4 that good...

Re: Introducing myself
Darla, Thanks for the confidance. I am really looking forward to learning to use this tool and becoming good at it. You asked what my preferences for airbrush are, well I own a business and I custom make centerpieces, such as foamboard cut into shapes and painted, say like with disney princesses painted on them, also sign making. I want to do t-shirts also like you.
I have a question for you. I looked at the issues of the airbrush magazine and they look like something I will use in the future, but does it have something for the beginner like me that I can use now? I am afraid of getting overwhelmed with the complicated stuff. Any and all suggestions are welcome.Joyce

Re: Introducing myself
Joyce, in my estimation it's really to your benifit to learn the fundamental brush strokes..there's only 2 -- a dot & a dagger stroke--put those with a little linework & the mere practices learning these will encourage & show you what path to take with the airbrush..with everything you say you're doing at the present, you really need this Joyce..
These are the most basic practice sheets..you must learn to make between 12-15 dots in a row without turning your air off.. Remember with a double action airbrush the entire control is handled by the trigger.. Learn to handle the trigger & you're well on your way..You must make these dots all leaving the AIR ON in order to teach you trigger control..easier said than done--start practicing now & then it's on to the dreaded dagger stroke that can be sooo much fun to do..
If you have already learned to do these strokes accept my apology--I'm not sure you stated the level of skill you have with the airbrush..When you can duplicate these practice sheets you can then advance to the actual art of the airbrush..It can be a lot of fun & lucretive too!!
I suggest you practice on Viva paper towels & it's always best in the beginning to practice with black paint..Some people find it pure drudgery but practicing & mastering these strokes will assure you that your aspirations can become reality..

Re: Introducing myself
Darla, Yes I have practiced the dots and daggers and feel mostly confident with them. Thank you for sending those pictures to compare mine to. I have followed the airbrush lessons that Don posted and I even, yes I did ,tackled the palm tree beach picture with pretty good results. What do you suggest from this point? What kind of things should I start working on as well as continuing to practice the dots and daggers? I am so eager to start learning color and all that good stuff. Are there things in the Airbrush online catalog for beginners like me? Thanks, Joyce

Re: Introducing myself
Welcome aboard Joyce, it would hekp to see some of your practice sheets to help you with any mistakes you may be encountering, better to get the fundementals correct now than to have to break bad habits later. I posted a couple of threads awhile back with practice pictures for newbies to paint that all practiced the fundementals while actually painting a picture, but do to the lack of interest those posts have removed. It helps to see your work in order for anyone here to give suggestions to you to further your advancement with an airbrush.

Re: Introducing myself
Hey Darla, I subscribed to airbrush magazine and have been gleaning thru it since. Wow, what a ton of resource for anyone from start to finish. I got an extra large coloring book and painted some pics in it and I have to say that everyone is sooo right about practicing those dots and daggers until you can make them in your sleep. I am set on practicing them everytime before I start any project. This is a great forum, the people here are so good to help. I love it. I tried to post a picture of my palm tree beach scene, but could not figure it out. This is the only forum I have typed in. I have to learn how to navigate this place. Thanks so much for the encouragement everyone.

easy way to post up pics is to sign up for a photo hosting site such as photobucket.com . You the upload your pics to your photobucket account and it will give each picture a web address. Then when you post, click the little button that looks like a postcard and it will ask for the photos location. Copy that into the box and you're all set.

Re: Introducing myself
Which sheets are you talking about Joyce & I'll send them on to you..The large coloring book is a great idea but what is better yet is to put a piece of large newsprint over the design with a little spray adheasive (you should be able to see one through the other) & practice that way..you can better see what your linework & fundamental strokes are doing..
This site is quite a bit to navigate & although it takes you away from your practice you can really learn a lot here..--now go back to your practice--you can't learn it, if you don't do it.. Find the dagger stroke contest thread & see if you can handle some of them..they're a lot of fun once you get the hang of them..
