Default How'd you all get started?

Hi guys, as some of you know, I'm trying to get started on my own airbrushing...

I was just wondering how some of you got started.

Are a lot of you self taught? or did you go through some courses before you started on your own? or are you strictly taught like apprentice-ship style? or just courses offered through magazines?

Do you have art based backgrounds where you just wanted to start in a new medium (me)?

Just curious.

*edit*

What about Pin striping? do you guys do that too? or is that a whole 'nother world to you guys?

Do you guys come up with ideas on your own, create things entirely original? or do you mostly work from reference material? or something else?

I got into ABing because; one day I laid my motorcycle down before someone almost ran me over. It only scratched up the right side but the body shops wanted way too mush money just for base and clear. I realized that I could buy a whole set-up and paint it myself for less than they were asking.

When I found this site and saw the work that everyone does, along with all the support that is here, I decided to give ABing a try.

I have no art experience except for finish carpentry, which kinda helps with prep work.

Now I am a graduate of the prestigious Don Johnson online-video program I am perty much addicted to ABing now.

Ditto like Aixguy. I mostly use reference material but blend them into unique pieces. I use computer programs a lot to get an idea of how things are going to look like.

To get an idea of how I started, go to advance search and on the right side type in aixguy and make sure it says show threads started by. Do the search and go to the last page. Should be 2005 something.. then read forward.. Not sure if non subscribers will see much but give it a try.
You can query anyones name to see the old posts.. Kimmo would be a good one to do.. as well as Brushbyair and ChuckTx. Not to many active posters that have been around for years and years..

there you go doug posted this 11-29-2005 click on the link below

http://www.airbrushtechnique.com/for...ew-folks-5950/

posts only go back to 2004 as we moved to vb from another forum about that time

Kimmo joined us in 04-27-2003 we turned him to the dark side painting bikes, helmets, even house hold items from painting fine art, his fine art is still outstanding.

Kicks joined about the same time.

Patrick joined about the same time also his work over the years speaks for itself.

Doug got involved here in 2005 to learn how to paint hollween items as I remember and has moved way beyond that.

I started in 96..after an early retirement from law enforcement...sister brought me some yard at to referb and a monster was created...I have increased my building space threes time over the years, and forged Lawnytoon Yard Art into one of the largest distributors of the suprise yard greeting images on the net.

I couldnt draw a stick gal to start, but thru this board..vids, and mags...I have learned alot...Im into mostly cartooning with the airbrush, and rely alot on patterns..In the last year I have added the automotive and some custom painting...I joined here in 2005

I used to draw as kid. Then about 2 years ago I meet a fellow biker who took his bike apart, painted and airbrushed it. That got me interested. Did some research last year and here I am on this great site. joining as a member cut 80% of the guess work. Most of what I do is doodle for now, mostley free hand what ever comes in to my head at the time. Just trying to get the feel and flow, experimenting with air pressure and mixture of createx paint. Basically learning how to control the airbrush.

Self taught because back when i started there was no one to ask and there was no Internet to look it up on, so I got what I could find in the library which was mostly on illustrating and the history of the airbrush and looked for magazines. This was back in the late 70s and early 80s. The 80 were the big time for airbrushing now it is so,so and definitely depending on location. That is if you are looking to make it as a t-shirt artist.

well as you have seen during the earlier posts,,i've been around for awhile
and i realy enjoy this forum,
i had been painting with a hairystick and oils for about 20 years
before i tried out airbrushing 1998 since then thats been the tool of my choice when painting.and i'm self taught
i paint with and without reference pics, depends on what i gonna paint
animals and portraits you are bound to have reference pics to get a
acceptable result.(in my mind)

I'm a newbie to the AB world but I plan on being here for a long long time.... I've wanted to AB for most of my young life and just finally got the chance to start. I've been doing it for about a year. I'm self taught but I wouldn't be anywhere without all the support of this forum. There are people here that will bend over backwards for you, just to help. Don I hope you realize how much I appriciate what you do to keep this forum up and running. I'm a computer tech and I know how hard it is to keep the servers up and running 24/7 let alone be the sys admin also. PROPS TO YOU

Got my first airbrush in 1976. A Paasche vl. All I did was shade letters on talegates.
No information to be had back then. I have been pinstriping since 1973. All self taught.
No art classes or anything. Moved to Arizona in 1999 got interested in airbrushing again.
Took some classes at the adult college. A bad experience for me. Lousy instructer. Found this place almost 2 years ago and now I love airbrushing, and pinstriping as well. I have learned from everyone here. Thank you so much. Thank you Don . In between all this I painted cars, trucks, and worked for a few airline companies doing painting on jets.
Nothing compares to the great people here.
