Jack, I'm only a beginner too and am having a similar problem. Lots of help will be coming soon but what I've seen so far unless you get the lettering cut at a sign shop, you just have to take it slow, use a sharp blade (some use just a razor blade others use an Xacto knife) and watch the line not the blade. (Harder to do than say!)
I'm in the process of making some license plates with lettering and I have practice cut them a few times that now I'm confident I can do them on the plate. Hardest part is not cutting to deep and cutting the paint. Light touch and a sharp blade!

I'll let the more experienced take it from here.

Welcome to the Forum.

The problem with exacto knives is the blade needs to be sharp and that means swapping out blades a lot.

Personally, I went with a vinyl cutter and use masking film on a vinyl cutter.

Also found that a swivel tip blade makes it a bit easier..

Jack, what's fritz paper? The samller your area the more problems you get cause as you cut there isn't much to anchor it down so to speak. Use a new blade for sure. Some like cutting mats others like to cut on bristol board. As you're cutting you may want to hold the piece behind the knife to secure it so you don't get tearing.
