I don't know what you have to do to become CSA approved. What I did was asked questions and watched how the pros painted their masks, then use the same techniques to paint my customers masks. That way I know I'm not going to do something to compromise the integrity of the mask and affect it's durability.
I also do not remove any CSA or safety stickers (that are usually found on the back plate). I'll either leave the back plate unpainted, or paint it to match the rest of the mask but mask out the stickers so they are still there to be seen when I'm finished.
As far as I know if you paint using the proper procedures/techniques, the mask is still CSA approved. But this could be a more serious issue with professional teams perhaps?...
