Painted a set of tins for a repeat customer about a year and a half ago. He brought his parts in and they had been recently painted including body work and priming. . He insisted over my objections that he was confident in his "buddy" and that he knew what he was doing. He also mentioned that he paid about half of what I would charge to take his parts from metal to base color. Fast forward to a couple of days ago and he is knocking on my door with the pieces. Bubbles, chips and huge amount of peeling paint. this is after he paid a good bit of cash to have me paint his images over this "execellent" base.
We like to strip every piece that we get in tthe shop and redo everything from metal up. Everything done in house. That way its all our work and we stand by it. No questions about whos responsible if something happens to go wrong. If you do not do that part of the job yourself, make sure that you are working on a sound base. If you have someone else doing that part of the process, be conffident that they are going to stand by their work as much as you do. If a customer insists that you work over an existing base, let them know that you can not be held responsible if anything goes south with the pieces. You dont know what the hell is going on under your work. Stuff like this does not happen all the time but when it does, make sure the customer is aware of the risks and not to let you be the fall guy for someone elses shoddy workmanship. Do it once and do it right.
Oh yeah, he is now paying what I had said 18 months ago to get the pieces done from metal up as well as the cost for striping AND for doing a new set of images not to mention what he paid for the original "execellent" base.
Sorry for the long rant, but stuff like this drives me crazy.
