Air Compressor Parts
Well I'm trying to find air compressor parts to build my own quite air compressor for airbrushing.
But it's like pulling teeth trying to find a place that sells compressor parts here in north Alabama. Guess nobody ever repairs a compressor in the cotton state. Does anyone know of a place that does or an internet address of a good place to order from for air compressor parts?
I'm going to buy a refrigerator compressor at work but need pressure switch, safety valve, check valve ect...
Any tips on where to find parts would be appreciated.

Re: Air Compressor Parts
I don't know how much all of the parts would run but sears and kmart sell a small 4 gallon 1.5 HP porable compressor for $99...by the time you get everything else shipped, that will give you a good start and have the regulator and everything on it...then all you should need is the refrigerator motor...
If you want to look try northern tool... www.northerntool.com...or www.harborfreight.com. I am sure there are other ones out there, but...I don't know where...
If you can tell me where to find refrigerator compressors that work for our application, I would be happy...I have looked everywhere and the only one I can find have LRAs of 13 or so...I did find one with a 22 LRA, but they wanted like $450 for it...and that didn't seem right...and they don't make it easy by saying 1/3 HP or 1/2 HP or 700 Watts like described in the how-to's.

Re: Air Compressor Parts
You should be able to go to an elctrical supply house for pressure switches and things of that nature. Or just go to an appliance repair store.

I',m going to buy a frig compressor where I work for an Employ discount. I'm guessing around 90 bucks. When I know more I'll post back here and let you know the details.
-----------------------------
None of the appliance or hardware places have any air compressor parts like check or safety valves, pressure switches that I have found in Decatur or Huntsville so far. I have check with over a eleven so far. I would be happy to find a good site on line to order from but not finding anything so far. Just air tanks.

Re: Air Compressor Parts
I not sure if you mention where you work but if your company have any air compressors , ask about who they buy compressors parts from or talk to your local businesses that use compressors every day, maybe they can give you a name of someone that works on compressors or stock the parts for compressors

The company I work for manufactures refrigerators not compressors. If only it was that easy.
Still working on where to find the parts. Who sells air compressors parts?
Maybe John Freitas can, the guy who wrote one of the articles on build your own compressor could clue us in if hes still on this forum.

Re: Air Compressor Parts
do a web search for this company ( Campbell Hausfeld air compressors, click on Jackssmallengine which is located in Tennessee
jack small engine sells air compressor parts as well as a lot of other stuff
If your local garage compressor QUITS , who will you call, the garage and tires changing company and spray painters would need someone QUICK because their work depends on the compressor,

I'll try them as I begin my quest again this Monday morning. Your right somone have to sell air compressor parts as the auto body & paint shop have compressors that can cost $1500.00 to $2000.00 bucks like the 80 gal compressors or bigger. Can't just through somthing like that out the back door over a $20.00 part.

Re: Air Compressor Parts
Your local hardware store keep parts catalogs , maybe they could order everything that you need for your compressor if they don't had the parts in stock already

Re: Air Compressor Parts
Well I found a local shop that sells air compressor parts. Professional Compressed Air Services of Alabama, Inc. Now my goal is to try and keep the cost under $200.00 to build complete. Got to pick out a 5 gal tank next and then bolt everything together then I’ll get the frig compressor and see about getting a welding shop to make me a frame for it all. I got a pressure switch rated to kick in at 95 psi and out at 125 psi. Also, a pop off valve rated for 150 psi and going to get a tank that can handle more than 150 psi max for safety.
I’ll post my results back here when I’m done and work everything out to share.

What was the rating? I did not remember the articles saying anything more then using a refrigerator compressor. I am just going to use a compressor form a 26 cub ft frig. It’s brand new but the cost to me is around 140 bucks and it does not come with a start up capacitor or P.T.C. That cost about 20 bucks more. I estimating on spending about $250.00 on my project for everything. It was not cheaper for me to buy a cheep air compressor and try and put a frig compressor on it. Tank is less then $25.00. And the cheep compressors I found did not have a pressure switch that could be wired into a frig compressor. Other problems with the hardware on the cheep compressors too so I’m starting from scratch.
A tip on frig compressors, the oil in them designed to absorb water. Not something you want but the engineers here said to just drain the oil out and flush out then replace with slick 50.
If you like I can pick up a compressor for you to get you an employ discount price and ship it to you with the wiring specs if you’re interested. Cost plus shipping.

I knew the oil was made for a closed system but that is the first I have heard about slick 50 - thanks for the tip

Re: Air Compressor Parts
From the clinton article on airbrush artist..."Compressor motor used Matsushita model FN66F11R Locked Rotor 19.2A Which rates about 1/3 h/p Anything with a LRA of 19 or more will work."...the second guy said 700 Watts (which I can't find a wattage rating anywhere on any of these)...
I have been trying to figure out the LRA to HP conversion, but I have found a half dozen different equations and have yet to go to the library...Maybe your guys at work know...I sure as heck have no clue...

Locked Rotor 19.2A
Do the 19.2 A means 19.2 AMPS
I don't know about Lock Rotor but 1 H P is about 700 -775 Watts
when motors freeze up , they can draw more current or amps

Re: Air Compressor Parts
From what I have researched, and LRA of 19.2 A means that the motor will draw up to 19.2 A...so if they draw anymore than that, they are supposed to be bad...
"This amperage is the current the motor will draw when the motor is started and when the motor is attempting to start and run but is unable to do so for some reason such as mechanically stuck bearings. A rotor is said to be locked anytime the rotor is not rotating. This is normal on a motor that is off and ready to start. If a motor has bad bearings and cannot start, the proper terminology for that condition is to say the motor has stuck or frozen bearings. It would not be correct to say the motor has a locked rotor. All motors when off have locked rotors. The LRA rating of a motor is the most amperage the motor can draw under any condition." from http://www.achrnews.com/CDA/Articles...00f932a8c0____
However, after a little further research, I am starting to think that an LRA is not a valuable tool to determine Hp, as I think factors like...maybe I will just search for a HP rated compressor...

Re: Air Compressor Parts
I confuse lock rotor with a torque test (brake test )where the motor shaft is unable to turn but do give a H P rating,
a motor starting current is 2-3 times the running current so 19.5 would be close to 1 H P
