new pinstriping
hi
here a picture of my second pinstriping on a piece of glass . This one is far from be perfect but i've done it in one time without erasing errors.
My probleme is to do intersections ! How to finish a line like we start it ( without sharp tip ?)
For the small curves , it's becoming better only on the left side, i'm left hand and i can turn the brush arround my fingers, For the right ones, i haven't the way to do it.
For the bigger right curves , i use my little finger (right hand ) to turn arround.
I've done many exercises panels for practice and i really enjoy to see what happen when you turn the brush , very interesting !!!

Re: new pinstriping
Hi mayhem
thank
you should try , it's very funny from create a design on a paper to paint it with brush. Even if i can see my progress, i'm very far to do it directly over a customer bike, except if i can remove it untill i get the good one, it can takes years !!!

Re: new pinstriping
Glad to see your getting into pinstriping. Its a long learning curve but well worth the effort. If you are left handed then I presume you are starting on the right side of the design so that you will be less inclined to drag your fingers thru wet paint. im right handed so I work from left to right. To end a line (if ou are using a sword striper) try turning the brush upside down to end the line, called the Finlan Flip after Pete Finlin. AL

Re: new pinstriping
Hi all
So , i've found some time to practice and discover pinstriping.
here my last one, again the same colours but i only have these one.
I've seen scrolling brushes exist for pinstriping , are they good for curves ?

Re: new pinstriping
Hi rowie
Thanks
I really like to practice pinstriping, it's very creative job.
I will practice more when i will have time to do it.
My problem is i don't like the one shot paints, because of the smell and the fact that it's difficult to clear! i think it will be better for me to use HOK pinstriping paints but they are very expensive here !
In fact , i've tried with base ! it doesn't work
I think one shot polyurethane should work better, but i havent' used it , even with gun or airbrush ! What happent if i don't put hardener ? They will never dry ? Or if i put hardener , can i clear it like a base coat ,
I have to try

Re: new pinstriping
To be honest, my knowledge of all the different types of paints is very limited. I tried to ring my brother but the lazy sod is still asleep.
I will try to find out what I can for you Pat.
I always thought, rightly or wrongly, that hardner was used to "cure" the paint faster and therefor harden the surface against the elements quicker than letting the paint dry naturally.
I also use my brothers auto baking oven when I can, especially for the clear coats, it is awesome what a difference the oven makes to the quality of the clear, from what I have seen anyway.
Do you have a panel shop near you? maybe you could use their oven to cure the striping before you clear, oh and before I forget I always tend to do a very thin dry clear coat to set everything before I lay on the wet coats. I know your far more experienced that I am brother, and I dare say you already know all this, but hey I like to share what little I know.
Take care Pat.
your a good mate and a great artist.

Re: new pinstriping
hey pat.........maybe this will help...........hok striping enamels can be cleared over with no problems, or you can add the striping catalyst to them, so you do not have to clear. 1 shot takes seemingly forever to dry, even when using their hardner. you do not have to use the hardner though. if you spray it with an airbrush, thin it with mineral spirits or turpentine. and just for another twist........if you want to clear over 1shot, here are 2 methods i have used and not had any problems with, used the same hardner you are going to clear with and only clear over it in under 3 hours of laying down the stripes or over 12 hours.

Re: new pinstriping
Pat,
Your pinstriping is looking good. You are off to a great start. It just
is alot of pravtice. The more you do the more easy it will become
relaxing to you. As far as 1 Shot and HOK. There are other paints you can
use so you can clear over them. If possible you can get brushing lacquers
that you thin with lacquer retarder. They dry very fast, but you can not
wipe off any work within minutes though. Another trick is to get water base paint and make a scroll designs and you can clear over them too.
I never had good luck using any type of clear over One Shot, even with hardener added. The climate here in Arizona is always too hot or too cold.
I have had good luck using House of Kolor pinstriping paints. Do as Rhyne
said as far as th hardener and it will work fine. Clean your brushes after
using to as the paint will ruin them quickly. After I use HOK I clean brushes
with gun cleaner and dry them gently and then soak them in oil so the brush
hairs will stay soft. Then before starting to paint clean brush and you are ready to go. After oiling the brush lay it on side on metel or glass tray for storage.
Keep up the good work Pat, it always good to see you pinstriping.
