After I clean and oil any of my brushes, I lay them flat in a metal
or plastic tray. Also the try is totally smooth on the bottom. When using
a Mack brush that is hand wound you have a bump on the right side.
This is where the hair is wrapped around wooden handle. When laying
your oiled brush down to store it, make sure the wound bump is on top.
This way the brush is flat. There are times I don't touch a brush for
a year!!!!! When I need that certain brush I just clean it out, use it
then wash it out oil it, and lay down in a tray. Since its so dry where I
live and so dusty I periodicaly will re oil them.
Its kind of up to you. If after lets say one month the hairs look alittle
dry and certain ones will then reoil . When you oil your brushes make sure
you get oil into the heel of the brush. Thats where its wound. You
will notice certain cokors are hard to really clean out good too. To me
blacks and purples and whites are hardet to really get clean. I usually
clean a brush 4 times before I oil it. In the mix of hairs sometimes they dry
out quicker. All depends on batch .

I use oderless mineral spirits. Buy by the gallon.
For oil you can use if you can get it, NeatsFoot Oil
Some use Automatic Transmisson oil. (I think its to rough on brushes)
I use Mineral Oil. You can get it at most drug stores, about 4 dollars a small bottle.
Its gentle on brush hairs and cleans out easy.
Never filter out and thinner of oil. Dispose it. Always use new.

I like to use pure Neatsfoot oil which is available at saddle and tack shops and feed stores. I like the Neatsfoot because it is made of animal by products, hooves and the like, and I feel it is closest to the oil the squirrel makes. For long term storage I have a brush box I made (and showed on this forum awhile back) for the brushes I use on a regular basis, which for me is at least weekly, I store them in a glass tube with a cork stopper. I drill a hole in the cork that the brush handle will squeeze into and the brush stands straight up inside the tube. The tubes are stored upright inside some rolls of masking tape. This way the oil soaks down into the ferrule where paint can collect and ruin the brush. These tubes previously contained cigars (which I disposed of by smoking them) but Ill bet similar tubes can be had at Hobby Lobby or Michaels or possibly a medical supply store. Or you could buy some cigars in glass tubes with cork stoppers. The H. Upman's are pretty good smokes. AL

Oh yeah, as far as cleaning the brushes here is how I do it. I get as much paint out as practicable with mineral spirits, then swish the hair and ferrule in lacquer thinner, then in clean mineral spirits and finally it goes into my ultra sonic cleaner containing about 2 inches of clean mineral spirits. Probably overkill but they do come out clean. It is cool to do the lacquer thinner swish when changing colors too, I learned that trick off the Steve Kafka DVD that tip and using Smoothie fish eye eliminator in your 1 Shot and using a screen to filter your 1 shot into your paint cup alone was more than worth the price of the DVD, Al

5 Steps to Killer Graphics. Is that Bob Kovacs?????????
He is from Fresno I am not fond of the Airbrush stuff although its ok.
His Pinstriping is cool. Check out the quarter inch with an Outline. Over and
under. He does whole cars this way. Hard to do. He does it so hair line you can't see it. I talk to Bob when I go out to California. They cal it a Fresno Pinstripe LOLOLOL
Not named aftr me. I am from there , nickname I had in a band LOLOL
Kovacs, Neil Averill, Cycle Arts, Craig Judd, igor and Soggy (Dale Oftedal)
do beautiful work.

Al, you can never overkill cleaning brushes. Good for you. Where can I get a ultrsonic cleaner thats safe for mineral spirits??

Redneck,
I'm not sure if vasiline would penetrate into the hair at the ferule contact which is the worst place for paint to dry. Here is a tip for vasilene. If you ever space out and leave your brush in the cup and it bends the hair at a right angle you can use vasilene on it and put it in the freezer over night. that will straighten out the hair, got that one from Craig Fraser. Fresno, I got mine on Ebay. I think Harbor Freight sells one too. Everyone I've seen has a stainless steel tub so mineral spirits is no problem. Ive even used gun cleaner and naptha in mine but right after you clean the liquid does heat up so give it a half a minute to cool off.
http://search.ebay.com/ultrasonic-cleaner
It doesn't have to be very big I think mine is a quart but I only use about 2 inches of mineral spirits in it. Al
