Making $ for the New Airbrush Artist?

I was wondering if anyone can contact me at darthcratine@gmail.com and help me out.

I am new to airbrushing as in 3-4 months and not great at it and am in a financial burden. I am medically retired from the US Navy and Unemployable and am using airbrushing to suplement my income and need some advice.

I am the only artist where I am but lack the skills.

Here is what I am trying to achieve.

#1. Some simple ideas to make money with easy art even I can do.
#2. Some ideas for marketing said art on a limited budget.
#3. I need someone who has been where I am and willing to help me out.

Please help and get back with me.

Creatine (Jon)

PS: More info about me in intoduce yourself thread PLEASE read.

it's a digital 'airbrush', it doesn't relyy airbrush, but create a virtual picture on an object. i reckon it'll get developed to a better and better standard, be great for practicing i guess, lol

Hi ABers,

I'm attempting to move from t-shirts to goalie masks and was wandering how you fellow ABer,s would start painting this goalie mask. My thoughts were to paint it all white, mask out the chain, skull and white areas, then paint yellow , paint the black area in the skull, do the black detailing on the yellow area, then finish the skull. Is this the right approach, any suggestions are welcome.

Portfolio

Hi everyone, i thought i'd share this with you, it seems to be working well. I needed to put together a portfolio of pictures of my artwork, instead of trying to show people on my mobile phone.
First, i went to a few stores to see how much it would cost for a folder. I ended up getting a heap of these booklets, they werwe on special for $4.99 each, so i grabbed a few, they are 6 x 4 photo size, and hold 100 pics.
next, i went to the local newsagent, they have a photo machine that prints out any size photos , i took in my flashdrive with the pics, plugged it in, and printed out the pics, 12 cents each.
Next was to put the pics in, i did them in various orders of pics, depending on where i was going to leave them. i had already asked around at panel shops, paint shops, etc to see who wouldn't mind having a small booklet of pics on their counter, most were quite happy, and were actually impressed with what i had done.
After the pics were sorted, i cut a stencil for the front cover, with my business name, and then in the inside cover, i printed 6 x 4 pages of my details, what i do, and how to contact me.
I have 5 in shops at the moment, have to do up some more when i get the time. When i have painted a few more pics, i add them to the portfoliio i have here at home, then take it to the shop and swap it over with the old one, and have a chat to see if there is any interest. i'm getting plenty of people having a look through, and they are impressed, but i now have to bite the bullet and go to spray shops, etc to drum up interest.
i'm generating some work, so it is working for me, just got to narrow down my areas. hope this is of interest and helps anyone thinking about doing something like this. the size of it is a plus, it takes up very little room, but catches the eye of people very easily :)

ps, anyone wants to add ideas to this please do, it all helps in the long run!

H.I.P. Stencil material

While cruising the net I stumbled across an old video of Terry Hill & his "Granite Girl" design from back in the day. In the video he mentioned that he didn't use acetate for his stencils, (although he did use acetate in this video) but that he used High Impact Polystyrene (H.I.P.). One of the advantages that he mentioned is that when the paint would buildup on the material, he could simply peel it off, providing a clean edge again, rather than having to continually re-cut worn stencils.

I use little shapes made out of a material that is like a soft foam, and has pre-stick adhesive on it... little flowers, stars, hearts, etc. These have a similar quality to the material that Hill mentioned, however, they are soft enough that they can stretch a little and are fairly easy to tear in sharp corners.

Although I've used nearly every type of stencil material around, I'm very intrigued by H.I.P. and was wondering if anyone here has ever used it, and where I could find some. I've cruised the net & found 1 manufacturer/distributor that will sell it in sheets from 18x24 & up, in various thicknesses beginning with 0.015.

Has anyone ever used this material before?

I got lucky with an Ebay bid on a old style overhead projector.... $10.50 for the projector, $22 for shipping.... LOL but what I hadn't expected is I got a light box in the deal.... yeah, that projector makes a great light box for transfering to frisket paper when you don't need/want to project an image. Didn't really think about it when I bought it but what the heck, its two tools in one!

So I go to work last night and I'm on the elevator talking and someone yells Hey Cliff nice work and the door shuts. It opens on another floor and someone gets on and congratulates me on my nice work. I said huh? So he explains that he saw some of my work over the tool room..... This goes on for another couple of hours before I get the chance to get over to the tool room. My last customer (Memorial Harley) had just picked up his parts from the clearcoater and brought in the side covers to show off, not only that but he put one out on the counter with a sign "Airbrushing by Cliff Vogan" and "Clear Coat by Karvia Auto Solutions". What a guy, I never had so much attention at that place. I added to the display and threw some business cards by the sidecover. Who knows, maybe this can jump start a business????

Problems with AA Candy adhering to an Aluminum base

Hi,
I just finished painting the background of a skateboard in a 'tru fire' technique and needed to lay down some japanese kanji graphics as well as a tribal style snake. I masked and stenciled and cut out my graphics and then put a base coat of dark/white sealer (from auto air spec guide) and laid a coat of aluminum base on top of that, again as per the auto air spec guide.

I then used auto air candy emerald green and mixed and reduced as per guide, sprayed a few coats until I got the colour depth I wanted.
The kanji graphics were covered in iridescent purple and metallic gold.

When I removed the mask, the kanji graphics seemed ok but the graphics covered in candy green.. the candy paint peeled away with the mask.. it didn't stick at all. I am not sure what I did wrong?

I could use some help or suggestions.

Career Advice

I was introduced to airbrushing when I was 14, and was told I had a real gift for it. I took a few courses off and on over the next couple of years, and by 17 I was doing some work selling airbrushed portraits and caps with Airbrush Venturi. For a while I was considering a career in airbrushing, but decided to take the university path instead.
I'm now about a year away from getting my PhD in chemistry, but I still hear the call of the airbrushing world. I still find myself deconstructing everything around me into shapes, and working out how I would go about airbrushing it.
I enjoy chemistry too, but it doesn't come close to the passion I have for art.
So I guess I'm after some advice from people in the airbrushing industry, or people trying to break into the industry. Can you make a decent living airbrushing? Or should I just keep it as a hobby, and find a job that will probably pay a lot better, but I won't love nearly as much?
