Default One Shot through airbrush

Hey guys,

I was trying to shoot some One-Shot pinstriping paint through my VL, with a #3 tip and needle, and it was spitting badly. I had thinned the paint with the One Shot reducer prior to this, and even reduced it more without any considerable difference.

The reason for this was that I did a painted design on a new Harley Street-Bob with the origianl flat black paint. The customer did not want to take the bike apart nor wanted any clearcoat over the design, so One-Shot paint was my only choice. I painted the design on with a brush and shaded it a little with my airbrush (still spitting but hardly noticable on this design). I went to put some drop shadows on some previously pinstriped flames, and the spitting was horrible. I wiped it off and told the guy that I would do it later as he was in a hurry to take the bike to the beach.

What's the secret to spraying One Shot, or was it just my gun? This was the first time I tried this, so any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dean

here's a good tip from Tramp Warner author of the book mild to wild pinstriping. he's does amazing airbrush work with 1-shot by thining to the consistency of 2% milk with turpentine thinner. he sprays it at 20-25 psi. if it's to thick, you get spattering, too thin you get spidering.

Thanks Rhyne,

I might have had the air pressure too high, but I thinned the paint to that consistency without any noticable difference. Maybe I'll try the turpentine thinner method instead of the One Shot reducer.

Thanks,
Dean

I once shot some metalic silver reduced with mineral spirits and did not get any spitting. The metalic silver is already pretty thin compared to some of the other colors. I reduced it about 1:1. The down side to shooting 1Shot through an air brush is it takes forever to dry and gums up your brush. At least that was my experience. I'd much rather shoot urethanes but then they do need to be clear coated. AL
