donp, I AGREE with the "aero" change(s), and the "cubic inches" too, and think that would help enough to get rid of the "plate(s)" They could drop the compression ratio some. They are just "packed in there too tight", and got no power reserve(s), which makes 'em "have to run right in there too close". I've been following this stuff for most of my life, and remember when they first put the plate(s) on the car(s). At that time NASCAR wanted to "tighten" the field 'cause "certain car(s) were running away from everybody else( SOME of the other "rule(s)" were to try to prevent so much cheating back in the "early days", or pre-"Modern Era" as they call it). They are STILL pretty good about "bending" those rules though. LoL . Even with the wicked speeds they run, a Cup car is NO DOUBT the safest ride you can get. Wouldn,t want to hit a wall at those speed(s), but better in a Cup car, instead of a Formula or Indy car, no doubt.
Seems like NASCAR could increase the weight too. Back when the Mazda(s) were "stomping" everything in sight, they made them carry an extra 100 lbs of weight to "even it up". Hey, NASCAR has the IROC series, but I guess they're not too fond of the SPEC racer(s) (that's what most "budget" LOL racer(s) are if they want to "factor out" the difference(s) in vehicle(s)).
The old adage still applies -
SPEED - How fast do you want to go ?, How much money do you have to spend ?
NASCAR is still getting more popular day-by-day, and it's great to watch, but I just don't know about SOME of their "choice(s)". It would be tough to have all that responsibility. It's like you said, they are concerned with the fan(s) and driver(s), and having some hurt or killed It was REALLY SAD when Dale Sr. died, but he knew the risk(s) ( as they ALL do) and he was doing what he loved to do. I've had my share of ride(s) / drive(s) on track(s), and it IS A RUSH
Prob'ly the best quote I've heard, from a "movie star-turned racer", who had run Sports Cars, Formula 4000, etc... and he was doingthe "Petty thing" (back when it first started), and he said -
"I've been in lots of race cars, and it's cool to get up to 160, 170, 180... , but with these, you get up to those speeds and STAY THERE"

kinda' "puts it in perspective" doesn't it ?
It's STILL ranked as the PREMIER Motorsports series ( You've GOT TO ALREADY have a Championship in some other series, just to be CONSIDERED for a Cup ride, much less, to be able to get one )
You and Don have a GREAT time at the "ZOO"
