Degreaser question

What household product would work as a degreaser since I can't afford to go and buy any at this time? I have some scrap peices of metal and want to do some practicing on metal with my Aqua-Flow which is good for autamotive work and then use a rattle can clear for now.

Fred, are the metal pieces small enough to fit into the sink, try some dish-washing liquid, if the grease are not to heavy, this is only a idea not sure that it will work, a another idea is oven cleaner [untry idea also, try these at your own risk

I am going to try just scuffing up the surface with a scotch brite pad since that is all I have then all I have to figure out is what to paint.

Fred, I am glad that you never try oven cleaner, it will work on steel BUT NEVER I REPEAT NEVER SPRAY OVEN CLEANER ON ALUMINUM, it will eat right thru. aluminum
gasoline will remove grease also, the hand cleaner that car mechanics used will also remove grease and oil-based paint/ water-based paint

Well dosen't look like today, I couldn't find my scotch brite pads and the only sand paper I have is 150 Grit

A sponge and comet or a wash powder like tide made into a paste and applied with the sponge might work, tide or comet make a good hand cleaner also

Fred the green side of a sponge will work. A comet wool. You can use mild soapy water to degrease and wipe clean. Windex, rubbing alcohol, fantastic

mineral spirits works pretty good also......pretty cheap. charcoal starter liquid works......

If you got a portable steam cleaner, the steam will remove grease or put the metal in a pan of boiling water if the metal will fit in a pot

No need to fear I picked up some more scrap panels from a place called Tims Trim today and then went to Auto Finishers with $4.70 in my pocket, showed him my portfolio of airbrush work and he was astounded by my portraits. He said they have people coming in looking for airbushing all the time, but he never knew anyone good enough, so he hooked me up with a pack of 800 grit sand paperand some presoaked degreaser wipes for what I had. The sand paper alone was $4.75 plus tax. Then he said he could definatly hook me up with some work.

Dawn dish soap is a great degreaser......use it mildly once it's painted, but as far as prep, some steel wool and dish soap works good. Be sure to dry very thouroughly....don't want to rust any steel.
