Brushbyair,
I am currently in Iraq and cant do a specific tank for this competition but just completed this before deploying again. If the entry doesn't conform under the 'specifically for the competition' rule I will remove it! But here goes...
The tank itself is off a Suzuki 1400cc Bike. The tin was badly damaged so needed a lot of repair and could not be used again without a serious repair to the fuel cap receiver. So I used this as an opportunity to 'show' my work as a business card and had an agreement with a friend to display it in his custom workshop.
The Job...
Started with a complete clean out of all the dents and bumps and refilled with a good quality easy sand, filler followed by prepping and undercoat.
The first paint coated in white then sectioned off the top part base coated in blue and then the white stars individually resprayed in place white.
The red stripes were lined out and painted after, the whole tank was then lacquered for the first time to preserve the painted flag...
After flattening the lacquer the next morning the flame design was laid out and masked off, then the tank was sprayed white to remove the red stripes that were left in view, after that a black fade from the front to the back to give the flag some depth at the head of the tank.
It was then given a marble effect on the black and white fade to give a nice look in the base color, followed by a clear coat of metal flake...
The area where I was going to freehand paint was blacked out and then the scull stencil was shadowed in with white to get the proportions right then I started to paint the features freehand. Finally I added drop shadows to the custom flames. End of day two the second layer of Lacquer was applied...
Day three the lacquer was flattened again and the effects where added like the sparkles of light the drop shadows giving the flag the 'folds', the words the Jester and then a final lacquer was applied and dried, followed by flattening and polishing...
The tank was then gifted to Shark Motorcycles in Hereford England and is displayed in the shop with my business details below it...
Thanks for looking, hope it makes the grade!

Reason: Rule Comment Added
might as well have a go.. eh
this tank started out red with no repairs to do,unlike the one that was on my bike.
After removing the the decals and cleaning thoroughly, i give it a few coats of base coat sealer dark..all paints are AA by the way... then i lightened it up with some trans white giving a few contours on the way.
Using diamond plate stencil then my own made up rips i used the brainiac stencil from craig fraser.. a few bullet holes, bit of smoke then off to the shop for a few coats of clear.

Reason: to stay within the posted rules
Kant76, your entry for Tanks and Tins will not be accepted as a qualified entry without 5 - 10 progress pics as required in the rules, please correct this issue with your posts to stay within the posted rules, Thanks in advance, BBA
I would love to enter as I have a great tank to paint. Unfortunatly It's too cold to paint here and I don't have a heated place to paint. I'm going shack happy cause all I can use is Createx and paper inside. My hand is twitching just looking at all the great pieces of work!! I'm also happy to see other people masking. I was begining to feel like a schmuck because I have to mask just about everyting I do.
Masking has always had alot to do with airbrushing as far as I can remember. I was taught this since the day I first picked up an AB. It's funny but the other day someone told me that if I masked any of my artwork that I wasn't a true ABer, that everything should be done freehand.
I felt sorry for that person because I have achieved and learned alot by masking and vinyl use. That is part of the business nowadays and the artist who taught me include any and all masking methods, that is just as much part of the artform as pulling back the trigger on your AB.
So yeah Bahamut mask away and ,,enter the contest when you can,,, you are definitly not a schmuck for doing so, even if it is part of every project you do.
Sorry to ramble but it just reminded me of the conversation that I had with the artist that commented about masking vs freehand.
Good luck to ya'll!!!

....don't wanna be rich, don't wanna be famous, just want to be remembered....
The artwork on this chopper tank was inspired by a sketch by Rod Fuchs who graciously granted me permission to use. Thanks Rod!
With a high ridge going up the middle of the tank, It was a little "tricky".
Hyabusa front fender, started out very scratched and abused, I can honestly say that even though this was the first bike part I hope there will be many more, this was fun, challenging but heaps of fun.
The tribal bone work was inspired by some of Rod Fuchs work, whom I rang to ask if I could use it, he graciously agreed.
The chook is actually a Japanese Falcon, which is the direct English translation of the word Hyabusa.
Hope you guys like it, I know I do.
Thanks for all the encouragement too guys, it makes such a difference.

This one is done over a black base coat with pearl and red candy flaming.
Logos and names are done with knife ( i really have to buy a plotter

Heres my entry. It's a tank off a Vulcan. Did everything but the clear. The guy who did the clear did an awesome job and for free, well not really. We talked it out and if he needs some artwork done I'll hook him up and when I need the clear done he'll hook me up. This was all done with ETAC private stock and an Iwata HP-C.

I hope I don't ruffle any feathers by replacing my first entry with this . Doesn't say in the contest rules about changing out your entry so I hope it is OK. If so I will be glad to pull this out with no problems
I posted the WIP pics in the how to forum but I will post a few but not all of them.
