There is nothing wrong with your progress at all mate, a portrait, especially facial, it one of the hardest things to do.

And I get told that heaps when I'm busy kicking myself for stuffing one up!

Are you using transparencies or opaques?

you can always go over things with a the same colour a few shades lighter and slowly build it up again.
