Hi Natalie,
There is so many different ways it can be done. It's really up to the artist and what works for them. Personally, I don't do a whole lot of underpainting, but that could change in the future. Some artists will do a detail drawing in graphic or colored pencil, and then AB over the finish drawing. Also, you can paint (using a AB) with a dark blue or a diluted black paint for a underpainting, Then the finished underpainting should look like a monochromatic painting.
