Illustration board works great, there are many different kinds though-I make sure it is acid free core. I would recommend use a fixative or a matt finish over your your pencil work. My avatar was painted in 1989-It started as a pencil drawing and the color work is water thin washes of liquitex acrylic mixed with their matt varnish. It has held up well over the years I just wish I used a better illustration board. Bristol board also works well for airbrushing and is a nice surface to do pencil work on, it holds up to erasing well comes in pads or you can get heavy weight hot press surface bristol board from a real art store.
