    Default What causes

is this tape impression caused from taping before the paint is fully cured??

It was dry to the touch after 20 min. It was intcoat cleared then taped when i pulled tape off i got this tape impression. (not to be confused with the tape sticky stuff just a impression)

just a newbie here but ive seen it done while painting trim, when i taped off an edge on a window the paint was dry to the touch but it was not fully cured and it left kinda like little dents in the paint where i pushed down on it . but that might not even be the same thing just a thought

Use a faster reducer in your intercoat clear. I had this problem also, the intercoat clear's reducer interacted with the paint below and didn't fully cure.

If you have an intercoat on it and are lucky it is just a light film left from adhesive and can be cleaned away carefully.

If not film and is an imprint, you may have to do some sanding gently with some sandpaper if it has intercoat on it and it is an imprint. You can use about a 1000 grit but be very careful and meticulous.

    Totaly agree with Brad here.
I'm guessing you used HOK SG-100 and is nototrious for this, making you think it is dry but really needing a good hour to two hours to fully dry. Luckily , out here in AZ, we have some good intense sun and it will speed up the cure process.
Some people add a catalyst to it to get to harden quicker. I just feel all is needed is a little patience and also not to put it on to heavy the first couple passes.
Just do what brad says in the latter part of his reply and you should be good.

You have got good adivse. Only thing that I can add is trying to spray the intercoat clear at the end of the day. Being in Connecticut, its cold a lot of the time and we do not have a fully heated booth. Therefore we try to schedule our painting to allow for an interocat clear at the end of the day to sit over night and insure that it will dry completly.

    derkdaigler:
Intercoat clear is a clear that is not a hardened clear. Used to burry graphics or to help keep windows open for additional painting, or carrier for kandies and flakes/pearls even though HOK has a new clear for that now SG150 i believe.

Thanks guys for the info I figures it was not dry all the way. I figured after a good setting for 20 min it would be ok to tape on but aparently not. Figured it would dry as fast as the base colors. I ususally tape on them after 20 min.

I would use inter coat clear to protect a base wether it be opaque, pearl or metallic that will eventually get artwork or graphics and then re-apply to protect the artwork and or graphics. It's pretty much a clear base paint but without the pigment and other effect additives, at least that is my interpentation.

Good advice, all the way around. I had that same thing happen to me using a DBC 500 inner clear. It was very dry to the touch, sanded it with 800 grit wet even.......but something prevented either it, or the basecoat under it from curing 100%. Boy was I unpleaseantly supprised. Sanded out, though, so wasn't the end of the world, but really turned me off to the stuff for a while.

I was wondering.. I am painting a custom guitar body. I have sanded the body and primed the body. I then used a Pearle type paint. I applied 3 coats. However when I look at the guitar in the light.
It's not even. I am thinking I was to clean the body with a cleaning agent before applying color? What do I use to clean before paint? Mineral spirits? And now that I need to probably strip the guitar back down to primer? Or do I re sand. Re primer Clean then paint?

Hmm,,not sure what you meen,is the paint uneven,,you get it flat with
some clearcoat on,,it's like when you use masking technique you can get small ridges of colors these you can flatten out by apply clearcoat
    waters sand and clearcoat again,,
not sure if this was any answer to your question,
but that's one way to get rid of some edges,,
never sand directly on the paint it will be scratched and show through
    the clearcoat..

Gross, I have had that happen to me too!

When I saw it I panicked, thought I had stuffed everything up and the world had come to an end

So here is what I did!

I totally freaked out, I packed up all my tools, spent the rest of the day cleaning up the shed and the chaos around my feet and went inside to calm down and work out how I was going to stall for more time, so I could start over.

The following morning I went to my brothers panel shop to ask him about it, all he did was laugh and handed me some Low VOC clear with some hardener n stuff and advised me to just give it a nice wet coat or 2.

The rotten kid was still laughing his head off as I drove away!!!!!!

And I tell you, the little shit was right!

once the final clear had been applied I left the covers alone for hours and hours (ok, overnight in the warm shed), In the morning the marks were gone!

    It was all good!

Still, I have learned to be more patient when re-masking/masking over clears or intercoat clears, give them plenty of time to dry up before working on them again.
She might be rough n rusty but she's all mine.
