Default help with automtive paint clear removal

hi I have a few questions. I want to paint a car. ok the cars clear is peeling can I just sand the edges of the clear make them smooth then just paint over it. I really don't care if see a line where the clear coat is under the paint I just don't want the old clear to start peeling after I have the new paint on there. so is this possible??

if not what grit do I have to use to remove just the clear.

    thanks guys

if the clear is peeling in one spot, it will probably start peeling in another. i would sand it all down. depending on how bad it is would determine what grit....probably get by with a 320 wet.........

I totally agree with chucktx, also be careful with that base coat. Over sanding the clear (been there done that) is super easy to do. Then you have no choice to repaint.

Then you have to match the paint because if the car has been out in the sun it no longer matches the factory paint.

My neighbor has the same problem with an older motorcycle that he bought this weekend. He wants me to paint for him and I saw signs of the 4 letter word RUST. We are going down to the metal on his bike.

I think it really comes down to what you want:

Temp fix, carefully sand then re-coat.

More permanent, strip it down and lay down some fresh badness (paint) then clear.

And of course the most important consideration of how much money your willing to throw in to the pit

Good Luck and remember to post pics
