Default Vinyl paint mask for a plotter:

    OK,

Feedback needed. Those of you that use plotters and use the Low Tack vinyl mask, can you please tell me what brand you use and where you buy it and it's item number from the place you buy it from. Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

I put my left foot in, I put my left foot out, I put my left foot in and I shook it all about. I did the Hokey Pokey and I turned myself around, and now I'm laying on the floor dizzy.

I also use Oramask, but I like the Oracle 813 stencil film.
Or should I say my cutter/plotter machine likes it better.

But I get it from my vinyl & sign supplier.
It costs me about $20 for a 10 yard roll of 20"

Oramask is the one I use. ORACAL USA : Products : Products Quick List
    Look under stencil mask.

The have the 810 and 813 series.

The 810 is grey and very low tack and made for curved surfaces. Th havethe 810s for urehane based paints.

The 813 is a light blue color and a bit thicker than the 810 with more tack.

I bought a roll of both for my projects but a word of advice!! Try a piece on a clean mirror to check for film residu...before using on your painted surface. Ruined one of my project with the 810 product. When I painted over some areas that had previously been covered with the 810, the paint would not adhere at all!!...very bad situation. Brought back my roll to my distributor to show him and he took it back sying that this was not normal! He received another roll rom a different batch with the same problem. This is why I recommend you do the test on a mirror surface before hand. Anyway, The 813 works fine but does not work as well as the 810 on curved surfaces plus it has more tack.

I'm still waiting to hear about the 810 because I need some.

    Hope this helps.

Excellent advice Luc, I will remember to do that. If and when you hear about the 810 will you please let me know? Thanks Luc.

OK whenever I hear from my distributor, I'll get back to you no problem.
Actualy, I think I'll send an e-mail and see where they are at with the 810.

You guys have a lot more choice in the states!

I've used a few different films through my plotter and the biggest problem is not the film it's self but the backing it is stuck too. If the backing is too thin the plotter often rips it up.

The only stuff I use now is art-tool Ultra mask. It was designed for use in plotter (or so I was told)

    pros:
-tinted in colour- easy to see when applied or weeding.
-will stretch around curves if needed
    -solvent proof
    - thick backing; cuts awesome

    cons:
    -expensive
-sometimes the stretchy element can be a hinderance as it is soemtimes easy to stretch a removed shape out of shape- making it harder to put back on if needed.

I would like to know how the mask is used. I have used my plotter to cut out sign vinyl and then I have put that on a shirt for a mask. The problem is
once you have painted an area you have to cut the same pattern again to cover it up so you don't overpaint it when you do the next area.

I'm very new to airbrushing so I don't know much about this. I just know I
don't like to try and cut out a stencil with an x-acto knife. I don't suppose
there is any kind of plotter that just cuts out stencils?

Hi everyone, Thanks to every body for all the info in this thread.

I don't have any of the equipment for doing this kind of stuff. I did go to the ORACAL site and added it to my favorites, so if I ever am able to start selling my work I'll have the reference.

I'd really like to know what kind of vinyl cutters are used for this, and does it take a dedicated computer, and special software to make it work? I would guess that all these things are quite expensive when all costs are added up?

    Thanks

    Greger

Graphtec America: Cutting Plotters, Vinyl Cutters, InkJet Printers, Wide Format Image Scanners, Data Loggers, Acquisition platforms, Electronic Testing Instruments, Craft Robo robo cutter is one I guess you could use

the nice thing about airbrushing t shirt is a lot of it can be done free hand where on a hard surface that is not as easy to accomplish

Pennant felt stenciling material is a favorite stencil material for airbrushing t shirts
THE FELT PEOPLE: Felt, Fabric & Fixture Supplies
    or
Troy Corporation, (800-888-2400) for about $2.00 a yard plus shipping

using pennant felt is one of the best ways to go as it soaks up access paint where on card board, x-ray film or vinyl you end up with a bit of a mess, when i owned a t shirt shop we used pretty much pennant felt only

its easy to cut, draw a design on and you can use it over and over again

hopefully jammer or one of the other full time t shirt artists will add to this
    hope that helps

    Greger

You can buy all sort of cutters from very small to very large.
A Robo Cutter which is for crafts is about $200.00, large cutters a couple thousand bucks

Most come with free programs to get your image to the cutter, usually a vector image so you need a program to create those (Abobe Illustrator for example) or you can buy separate vector images. You can use your computer it does not require a special or dedicated computer except maybe when you get to the larger cutters.

I bought a Roland Stika to cut lettering for the helmet I do

One of the best investments I've made.

    hope that helps
