    Default Fairing

I bought my (almost) relic motorcycle a fairing, and after fabricating a mounting kit, decided that the metallic red doesn't look right with the silver and colrs my bike has! The fairing, a Vetter, has a sticker warning of not using regular paints of what I would assume was 20 years ago or more. I am now in the planning of the process of painting it , but am unsure of what I should do beyond sand it down . What kind of paint would work, clearing in the end, and attempting a flying dragon on my old Silverwing! Any advice?

what is the finish on the fairing now.....that will make a big difference.

If there is paint on it / clear.....how old is the fairing? Use of laquer paints and clears were common in the 1970's.....and could cause some problems with a uro base / clear system.

If the fairing is bare plastic or urethane (like bumper covers on automobiles), you will want to use an adhesion promoter to help the paint bond to the surface.

If it is fiberglass, you should just have to scuff and go.

Let us know so we can help!

It stated on the sticker laquers, this is how I got my assumption of it being an older (20 years plus) fairing. It is great condition, a few scratches that I put on it installing it. It is the old style of autobody painting, with the petroleum based type of paints though. I am sure of that.

I have the sticker in hand, it states to consult the owners manual for painting instructions. It also states as far as autobody work to not uses eoxies, body putties or ant unauthorized resins. This speaks of the older paint styles to me, though god and former wives have proved me wrong! Its all planning and formulation for now, just want to get it right frist!

What type of paint or brand do you plan on using to paint the fairing with?

    The reason I ask.....

Uro (base clear) automotive paints aren't really compatable with laquer.....bad things have a tendency to happen when you apply a uro over a laquer. There are products out there that are supposed to be an effective barrier between the two, but I've seen mixed results.

I read somewhere that some of your water based and water borne paints are compatible with laquer paint and clear, but I've never tested this personally.

What I would do, and have done in the past when confronted with laquer...

Strip it all off to the bare substrate, re-prime, base coat, and paint away. I always figured its better to be safe than sorry......although, that was always with customer work. I would be tempted to test out the sealer products, etc, if it was for my own bike....and if it works ok.....then I would feel confident using that application process for a customer.

I figured on buying on what best works. I feel its more important to get it right the first time! Stripping to surface sounds good! Just getting compatible base, paints and finish would do it from here, that and an AB'er that gets it right

I guess I can now conclude my study. I have a buddy who is a mechanic, and I now found out is also an accomplished auto-body guy. He told me much the same, to sand down. It will also accomplish to remove any rock chips. I have been debating a pearl black as a finished, color, but want to also paint a design or two. Anyhoo, he has volunteered to help me with everything including clearing. I have offered to help him with a new garage, so there is a little yams for coconuts in the mix . I am a surveyor by trade! Thanks for the help Big D

Could be a little while, doctor gave me the go-a-head to go back to work next week, and , being I was laid-off after my accident, I need to find a job now! I've been thinking of just doing a base color and doing a artwork when the snow flys.

    Shane'

Hey ya got me curious describing the sticker, and if its the old flurocarbon that the fairing is made of be careful!
That stuff would break down with some of the epoxy resins and solvents.
You wont see the damage till it has to take an impact (even a stone) then it crumbles. I've seen it first hand with a helmet I did many years ago. it was one of the first "lexan" helmets on the market, and carried a similar sticker.
I ignored the sticker and customized the helmet.
Went out riding one day and it got hit by a dime sized stone at 50mph. The helmet disintegrated and I was left trying to free myself from the padding and strap. Lucily the state trooper folowing several cars back saw the pieces go flying and pulled over behind me when I stopped.............
To make a long story short, when I contacted the manufacturer they asked if the helmet had been painted, when I said yes they said that the shell was compromised by the paint and very tiny cracks had formed in it and the warranty was void.
Live and learn I guess...........Just wanted to warn ya tho.

    BTW
They did have a putty back then to isolate the shell from the paint and they also had waterbased uro's (only for pro use) too. That they used to finish them.
    Live life......Have a ball......Take no shit!

My nose is all stuffed up.....and I don't smell so good.

Thanks Snuff! This is why I posted my questions, I vaguely recall having a similar incident when I was younger. I musta changed, I don't remember a chunk of my youth, but I remember that it made the surface brittle! There is stuff that works, this I know or remember!
