Default Problems with AA Candy adhering to an Aluminum base

    Hi,
I just finished painting the background of a skateboard in a 'tru fire' technique and needed to lay down some japanese kanji graphics as well as a tribal style snake. I masked and stenciled and cut out my graphics and then put a base coat of dark/white sealer (from auto air spec guide) and laid a coat of aluminum base on top of that, again as per the auto air spec guide.

I then used auto air candy emerald green and mixed and reduced as per guide, sprayed a few coats until I got the colour depth I wanted.
The kanji graphics were covered in iridescent purple and metallic gold.

When I removed the mask, the kanji graphics seemed ok but the graphics covered in candy green.. the candy paint peeled away with the mask.. it didn't stick at all. I am not sure what I did wrong?

I could use some help or suggestions.

Hey mate, hope i can help a bit. I haven't used the AA candies, but i have used opaques and transparents for a while now. one thing AA is notorious for is coming away with the mask. there's a few things you have to be careful of,
not putting the paint on too thick. you have to apply a real gently gently approach, laying the paint on in VERY thin coats, not letting it go on 'wet'. i hold the brush back a bit with a fairly high compressor setting(about 30, which is high for me, i usually paint around 15). this blasts the paint a bit better, but only apply very light coats, many times. drying with a hair dryer on cool is also helpful, don't use hot, it tends to make the paint go a bit rubbery.

Also with masking, try and use as low tack a mask as you can, i even stick the mask to my shirt and peel off to reduce the tack, just gotta watch out for hairs on the edges of the mask, but that tends to help with not pulling off the paint. i think with candy you apply it layer after layer till you get the desired effect, so i guess you have to be patient and try to put it on 'dry' and as thinly as possible.
    hope this helps mate

Thanks very much... I bet that while I thought I was putting on thin.. I likely put it on still too thick. and i did use a heat gun and the paint did go kind of rubbery.. I'll keep this in mind for next time.
